Inspirational Black and White logo designs
1. The importance of the sketch
Any professional logo designer starts their work firstly by interviewing the client(s) and secondly by searching the Internet for similar works as their project. After completing the ladder they will continue with the most important step, namely: sketching. Most of the amateurs skip this step leading to a grave error. Sketching supposes that the creator takes a pencil and draws on paper lots of possibilities ignoring totally the PC for now. To draw only in pencil is very important. Colors shouldn’t be utilized; the concept is the only thing that matters in this step. Conceptualization on a computer with the help of appropriate software is the next step and only after that we can handle the potential colors of it. In this manner of thinking a black and white logo should be an incomplete work but do not worry, it isn’t true!
2. Black and White
A black and white logo in my opinion is like a beautiful girl without any cosmetic surgery. The color is the key factor in any design, but in fact black and white are also considered to be colors! I believe that a good black and white logo is as powerful and more versatile that one using colors.
One of the basic rules of creating logos is the fact that it has to look well in a black and white format, so this rule is always respected by this kind of logos. Also a logo has to be able to render on a variety of media. For example, a company probably will use its logo on a website, but this surely is a mark of professionalism if it can be seen on a business card, on a letterhead and, why not, on a T-shirt. A highly colorful logo or one that uses gradients can’t be perfectly rendered in print, so
regarding this point the black and white procedure presents another great advantage.
Probably after reading my pleading you will ask yourself the following question: “Why don’t logo designers create only black and white logos?”. No way! Color is, as you might notice daily very influential, having a vital impact on everyday designs. My only wish is to emphasize the importance of this kind of logos which sometimes are really cool. The lack of color is occasionally substituted by hidden messages; these messages are for me the most interesting ones. There is a striking paradox yet to be explained:
on one hand a hidden message supposes a complexity in design, to be easy to understand, it has something that puts in function your brain. On the other hand a black and white logo is generally simple, and here is the actual paradox: a simple concept reveals a complex message.
