Inspirational Pagination: Magazine Layouts
Magazine layouts or Pagination, is a whole different kind of design. It usually involves a design that needs to be repeated over and over again and look good on every page. It also needs to display a lot of information at the same time. This is a kind of design that people don’t generally notice, but it is something that should be looked at.
So, below we have showcased some examples that show really well designed magazine layouts. Enjoy!
If you have seen any other layouts that would go into this category, feel free to put a link in the comments below. Thanks!

Nice page layouts, very nice… but that’s not pagination! Pagination is using AJAX to retrieve subsequent page content without a page reload.
Look at this page http://www.vegetariansareevil.com/thanksgiving.html – here pagination is used to load page content without reloading the entire page – images, header, etc.
That is pagination on the web.
These aren’t websites they are from print. It’s essentially the same thing though, you use the same headers, folios fonts throughout the entire publication. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagination

I’m wondering how some of these layouts print? Whether the stylesheet is custom made also.
They are usually done with a master page, which adds the page numbers and anything else that would be on every page. Then the font and header styles are done with a stylesheet.
nice layouts! if you have time, please check my design work from my website.
TNX ALL!
I think that magazine layout is an art the people take for granted. They just look at it and expect it to be nicely put together but when it is done badly, that’s when you notice. It’s nice to appreciate all the work that is involved in layout designs. They look great!
Thanks for making these magazine layouts available. I have been looking for sample magazine layouts where I could draw inspiration from.

GREAT collection very good stuff
thanks for sharing :)
Wow awsome collections
nice layouts..very sleek and masculine.
lol yeah you have no clue what pagination is man…. maybe do a little research before you publish things.
Well I would love to hear all about your print pagination expertise. I have already linked to a Wikipedia page about print pagination where you can read all about it. But again here is the actual definition of pagination:
http://dictionary.reference.com/dic?q=pagination&search=search
and here is the pagination page from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagination
But I’d love to have you tell me what kind of research I am missing…man
In magazine publishing, pagination simply refers to the order of pages. Pagination can change quite often during the production cycle based on ad sales, ad positioning, etc. Depending on the size of the publisher, pagination is typically managed through pagination software like K4 or something smaller like http://www.blinkplan.com.
What you are referring to is the various design palettes used, i.e. Type Palette, Color Palette, Style Palette, etc. that are assigned to particular publications. These design palettes are simply guidelines set to govern the overall coherence and homogenization of a magazine from cover to cover.
In production most of the styles are set to a combination of style sheets, master page items and library items in order to efficiently execute the necessary coherence. There are style sheets for EVERYTHING i.e. head, deckhead, subhead, body, body-drop cap, folio (page numbers), sidebar-body, etc.
Hope that helps!
Exactly…And these pages use the same folios, fonts, headers, colors style sheets as the rest of the publication. The difficult thing about paginating is getting everything to go together, while working with a set text, photos and ads.
Pagination is more than just using a stylesheet though. It is also the way that a page is laid out with the text, photos and ads (if there are any). You can’t just set up your styles and then magically push a button and it all does it for you. All the elements still need to be designed, paginated.
Additionally, I realize these are spreads, and pagination is more than just spreads, but would you really look at a couple pages of text to notice the how the headers, folios and fonts are similar throughout?
If you click to the Just Feed One article and look at the PDF, you can see a constant theme through out their entire publication. While they still have the spreads, the same theme (i.e. the fonts, folios, headers and all that other stuff) is consistent throughout.
@Joshua Thomas Btw, you have some really great spreads :)
Mouth watering and eye-catching. All the Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
